Greetings everyone.  In this issue I would like to discuss boron issues in tobacco, peanut weed control and soybean yield opportunities.

May was another month of challenges for field crops. Sulfur, nematode and bill bug problems were abundant in corn, water stress and nutrient adjustments were problems with tobacco and the usual compaction, herbicide and insect problems were common with the rest of our row crops. Hopefully we can look forward to better growing conditions and favorable prices.

Boron issues in tobacco

This may or may not be a problem in your region however many in the scientific community are beginning to learn that boron may play an important role in tobacco production. Although boron is applied in tobacco grade fertilizers boron deficiencies are showing up in the field. Studies have also shown deficiencies in the greenhouse. The problem can be easily corrected with a well-timed foliar application of .25 lb of boron per acre. Enclosed is a picture showing symptoms of boron deficiencies. Symptoms may include heart shaped leaves, curved leaf, thin lamina and distorted bud growth. Tissue samples can confirm the problem if present.

Soybean Yield Opportunities

Wes Ward shared with everyone a soybean management program that offers high yield opportunities. I encourage each of you to try and achieve the Harvey’s 65 Bushel Club! Harvey’s has a number of great AP products that if used at the right time will make grower money. If you have questions about the use or timing of our products please give either Wes or myself a call.

Sincerely,

Rick
