What actually makes a variety fit

Five things decide it, and yield on a brochure is not one of them.

Maturity group sets when it flowers and when it comes off, which decides whether double-crop beans go in behind wheat on time. The disease package decides what it survives in ground that already has the problem. The herbicide trait decides what you can spray over the top, and what is growing across the ditch. Standability decides whether it is upright at harvest or on the ground. Emergence vigor decides whether it comes up in cool, wet April ground or sits there waiting.

Nematodes are the one growers overlook most. A lot of the sandy ground in eastern North Carolina is nematode country, and a resistant variety costs the same as a susceptible one. An assay run alongside your soil samples tells you which you need, and it costs a fraction of what guessing wrong takes off the yield.
